Fence Blown Down in the Wind – Should You Repair or Replace It?
With the strong winds we often experience across the North West, it’s not unusual for fences to suffer damage. Panels can blow out, posts can loosen in the ground, and in some cases entire sections of fencing can come down.
When this happens the first question most people ask is whether the fence can be repaired or whether it needs replacing altogether. The answer usually depends on a few factors including the extent of the damage, the age of the fence and the cost of carrying out repairs.
Common Types of Wind Damage
Strong winds tend to expose the weakest points in a fence line. In many cases the issue isn’t the panels themselves but the supporting structure.
Some of the most common problems we see include broken fence panels, snapped or leaning posts, timber posts that have failed in the ground, and gravel boards that have shifted or cracked. Sometimes only a single section is affected, but in other situations multiple panels can fail along the same run of fencing.
If the posts and framework are still structurally sound, replacing individual panels can often be a straightforward repair.
When a Fence Can Be Repaired
Repair is often the most practical option where the damage is isolated to a small area. For example, if a panel has blown out but the posts remain solid, replacing the panel may be all that is needed.
Similarly, if a post has started to lean but is still usable, it may be possible to reset or reinforce it depending on the ground conditions and surrounding structure.
Repairs can also make sense when the fencing itself is relatively new and still in good condition overall.

When Replacement May Be the Better Option
In some situations replacement is the more sensible long term solution.
If multiple posts have failed, if the timber is heavily weathered, or if the fence is already nearing the end of its lifespan, carrying out repeated repairs can quickly become uneconomical. In these cases replacing sections or the full run of fencing can provide a stronger and longer lasting result.
The cost of repairs versus replacement is usually one of the biggest deciding factors. If repairs start to approach the cost of installing new fencing, replacement often becomes the better investment.
Choosing Quality Materials
The quality of fencing materials plays a big role in how well a fence performs in poor weather. Stronger systems with solid posts and gravel boards will generally withstand wind far better than lightweight panels.
At SCS Facility Services we install a range of fencing depending on the property, budget and requirements. For customers looking for a premium long term option we are approved installers of Jacksons Fencing, a high quality timber fencing system that comes with a 25 year guarantee.
Jacksons fencing is known for its durability and long lifespan, however we understand that every project and budget is different. We also install a variety of other fencing systems and can advise on the most suitable option depending on the location, exposure to weather and overall cost of the installation.
